IRMA : A New Reliable Multicast Architecture for theInternetKang

In this paper, we propose a scalable reliable multicast architecture called IRMA which guarantees reliable, sequenced, and loosely synchronized delivery of multicast streams. The IRMA architecture uses ACK-based reliability, a hybrid local server-initiated and sender-initiated loss recovery, and only local state, and provides support for end-to-end ow control and congestion control. In a radical departure from contemporary work, IRMA eeectively supports TCP as the reliablèmulticast' transport protocol at the end host without any modiications. We describe our implementation of IRMA and provide preliminary performance result to show that our approach is eecient and adaptive to the dynamics of the network.
